Wisconsin's tint laws are stricter than people think — and they're enforced. Before you spend $400 on tint, here's what's actually legal in 2026.

What VLT means

VLT — Visible Light Transmission — is the percentage of light that passes through the film. 5% is very dark (almost black), 50% is light. Lower number = darker tint.

Wisconsin's legal limits

Sedans (cars)

  • Windshield: top 5 inches only (or above the AS-1 line); no tint below
  • Front side windows: 50% VLT or higher
  • Back side windows: 35% VLT or higher
  • Rear window: 35% VLT or higher

SUVs, vans, trucks (multi-purpose vehicles)

  • Windshield: top 5 inches only
  • Front side windows: 50% VLT or higher
  • Back side windows: any darkness
  • Rear window: any darkness

What we install

We install Geoshield nano-ceramic film in 5%, 20%, 35%, and 50% — all backed by a lifetime transferable warranty. Ceramic film is the difference between cheap tint that bubbles and fades after two summers and a film that holds up in Wisconsin weather long after you sell the car.

Our recommendations

For daily drivers in La Crosse, Onalaska, or Tomah, we typically recommend:

  • Sedan: 50% on front sides (legal limit), 35% on rear sides and back glass
  • SUV/truck: 50% on front sides, 20% on rear cabin (matches factory privacy glass aesthetic)
  • Windshield strip: ceramic visor strip across the top — huge difference for sun glare
  • Full windshield (optional): 70%+ ceramic film for heat rejection without visible tint — invisible but cuts cabin temperature noticeably

Heat rejection — the underrated benefit

People tint for the look. They keep the tint for the heat rejection. A quality ceramic film blocks 90%+ of infrared heat — meaning your dash isn't blistering after eight hours in the sun, your interior fades less, and the AC works less. In a Wisconsin July, that's real.

Medical exemptions

Wisconsin allows medical exemption stickers for darker front-window tint. You'll need documentation from a physician and the proper exemption sticker on the vehicle. We can advise on the process if it applies to you.

FAQCommon questions

Quick answers.

  • Can I tint my front windows darker than 50% in Wisconsin?

Not legally without a medical exemption sticker. 50% VLT is the legal minimum on the front side windows for both sedans and SUVs.

  • How long does professional window tint last?

Quality ceramic film like Geoshield, properly installed, lasts the life of the vehicle. Cheap dyed films typically bubble or purple within 2–4 years.

  • Do you offer window tinting near La Crosse?

Yes — we're located in Tomah, easy drive from La Crosse, Onalaska, Sparta, and Mauston. All installs are climate-controlled in-shop, not done outdoors.
